Report: Little Richard, founding father of rock ‘n roll, dead at 87

J. Shearer/WireImage(NEW YORK) -- Little Richard, the flamboyant, envelope-pushing musician whose wild performance style and appearance helped set the blueprint for rock and roll, has died, Rolling Stone reports.  He was 87.  His son, Danny Penniman, confirmed his death to the publication.  No cause of death was given.

His string of hits, starting with 1956's "Tutti Frutti," included "Long Tall Sally," "Rip It Up, "Slippin' and Slidin'," "Lucille," and "Good Golly Miss Molly." Featuring pumping piano and lyrics often filled with sexual innuendo, Little Richard's songs were a massive influence on future legends like Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Elton John and The Beatles, and have been covered by countless artists through the years.

Little Richard's gender-bending onstage appearance -- including makeup, huge pompadours and showy outfits -- earned him screaming fans, and roles in early rock 'n roll movies like "The Girl Can't Help It" and "Don't Knock the Rock."  Prince is one artist who was taking notes -- in fact, Richard himself called Prince "the Little Richard of his generation."

While Richard once said his flamboyant appearance was designed to make him appear "less threatening" to white audiences, the sad truth is that white singer Pat Boone's much-criticized anodyne covers of "Tutti Frutti" and "Long Tall Sally" were more appealing to the mainstream, doing better or as well as Richard's did on the charts.

Born Richard Wayne Penniman in 1932 in Macon, Georgia, Richard was one of 12 children and left home at age 13.  He borrowed much of his musical style and appearance from Esquerita, a pompadoured singer and pianist from South Carolina.  Little Richard got his first record deal in 1951, but didn't experience any success.

In 1956, while working as a dishwasher at a bus station, Richard sent a tape of the racy song "Tutti Frutti" to a record label in Chicago. As the legend goes, he came up with song's signature lines -- "a wop bop a lu bop a wop bam boom" -- while washing dishes.  He was signed to the label, and a tamer version of the song became his first hit.

In 1957, Little Richard gave up music and became ordained as a minister. When he returned to music, it was gospel. However, he switched back to rock 'n roll in 1964 and, as Rolling Stone notes, when he played Hamburg, Germany in 1964, The Beatles opened for him.

In the '70s, Little Richard worked the oldies circuit, but in the '80s, he became a pop culture fixture, appearing in movies and TV shows, including Miami Vice.  In 1986, he was one of the first 10 artists inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Watch now: Coldplay drops video for new “Orphans” single

Parlophone UKAs promised, just one day after they released the single, Coldplay has just dropped the video for their new song, "Orphans."

The first half of the video is cobbled together out of various low-fi clips of frontman Chris Martin, both alone and with the band, performing the song in various settings -- the steps of a monolithic building, a rehearsal space, and various outdoor locations, including a beach where they're joined by dancers as the superimposed lyrics scroll over the footage.

The video's second half is more produced, and features Coldplay literally climbing the walls in a rotating room as they perform, as well as images of people celebrating while images of blossoming flowers appear and bloom.

The visual ends with a link to OurHopeland.org, which describes its mission as "[pioneering] innovative solutions and [building]new partnerships to prevent family separation, reunify children who are separated from their families, and [mobilizing] a movement of families to support children who are growing up outside of family care."

"Orphans" -- along with this week's other new release, "Arabesque" -- is from Coldplay's forthcoming new double album, Everyday Life.  The follow-up to 2015's A Head Full of Dreams arrives November 22.

Coldplay will perform on Saturday Night Live November 2.

Here's the Everyday Life track list:

"Trouble In Town

"Daddy
"WOTW / POTP

Report: Eddie Van Halen receiving cancer treatments in Germany

Ethan Miller/Getty Images via ABCEddie Van Halen was born in Europe -- the Netherlands, to be specific -- and that's where he's been going to receive medical treatment, according to a report from TMZ.

The website reports that for the past five years, the 64-year-old guitarist has been flying to Germany to receive radiation treatment for throat cancer.  According to TMZ, Van Halen was diagnosed almost 20 years ago.  In 2000, doctors removed a third of Van Halen's tongue due to cancer.

While Van Halen was a heavy smoker, TMZ says he believes he developed the cancer as a result of holding his guitar pick in his mouth.  While most guitarists hold their picks in their mouth, Eddie's pick was made of metal, not plastic, and TMZ reports that he's been told that the pick "could very well have" caused the disease.

TMZ reports that Van Halen is currently "doing O.K.," despite his illness.

In 2012, Van Halen underwent surgery for a bout of diverticulitis.

Kim Shattuck, frontwoman for The Muffs, dead at age 56

Kim Shattuck, 2nd from left; Omnivore RecordingsKim Shattuck, frontwoman, songwriter and lead guitarist for the 1990s Southern California pop-punk band The Muffs, died Wednesday at age 56.

Shattuck's death was announced by her husband, Kevin Sutherland, in a post on his private Instagram account that was re-posted by The Muffs co-founder Melanie Vammen.  Sutherland wrote in part that Shattuck "passed away peacefully in her sleep after a two-year struggle with ALS."

ALS, short for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is an incurable, fatal progressive neurological disease that ultimately results in complete loss of muscular function.

Shattuck co-founded The Muffs with Vammen in 1991 and, after a series of EPs and singles, they released their self-titled debut album in 1993.  The project included the single "Sad Tomorrow," which enjoyed the greatest commercial success of any of their releases.  The Muffs also contributed a cover of Kim Wilde's 1981 hit "Kids in America" to the soundtrack for the 1995 hit film comedy Clueless, while their 1999 song "I Wish That I Could Be You" was featured in an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Shattuck also briefly joined The Pixies in 2013, stepping in for then-recently departed bassist Kim Deal, but was fired only months later, apparently a bad fit for the more introspective band.

Shattuck's latest band project was the trio The Coolies, with Vammen and Palmyra Delran.  Proceeds from their self-titled debut EP, released last summer, went to ALS research, though Shattuck kept her own diagnosis private.

A new album from The Muffs, their first in five years, is due October 18.

Imagine Dragons’ Dan Reynolds and wife Aja Volkman welcome a baby boy

Araya Diaz/WireImageCongratulations to Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds and his wife, Nico Vega frontwoman Aja Volkman.  The couple just welcomed their first son.

As today marks the 2nd anniversary of our most tragic day in Vegas, it now also represents the day that we celebrate the birth of new life. We are truly feeling #VegasStrong today."

Reynolds of course was referring to the mass shooting two years ago to the day at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in his Las Vegas hometown.

Reynolds also tweeted some sweet photos, including one of him holding his new son, and another of mother and child together, that one with the caption, "beautiful strong mama and her little boy Valentine."

Reynolds and Volkman also have three daughters together -- Arrow, aged 7, and 2-year-old twins Gia and Coco.
