Surprise! Weezer has everyone from Toto to TLC covered with new “The Teal Album”

Crush Music/Atlantic RecordsWeezer fans are waking up to a surprise Thursday morning: The band has just released Weezer (The Teal Album), a collection of cover songs.

Of course, it features Weezer's hit cover of Toto's "Africa" but also "No Scrubs" by TLC, "Happy Together" by The Turtles, "Take on Me" from a-ha, Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean", "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" by The Eurythmics, and more.

Appropriately, the cover of the album shows Rivers Cuomo and the boys rocking some pastel-colored outfits that would have looked right at home on the set of Miami Vice, recalling the era that gave us many of the tracks.

The band is still set to release a new album of original music, Weezer (The Black Album), on March 1, 2019.

Here's the track listing for Weezer (The Teal Album):

"Africa" (Toto)
"Everybody Wants to Rule the World" (Tears for Fears)
"Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)" (The Eurythmics)
"Take On Me" (a-ha)
"Happy Together" (The Turtles)
"Paranoid" (Black Sabbath)
"Mr. Blue Sky" (Electric Light Orchestra)
"No Scrubs" (TLC)
"Billie Jean" (Michael Jackson)
"Stand By Me" (Ben E. King)

As previously reported, Weezer has announced a 2019 tour with Pixies, set to begin March 8 in Louisville, Kentucky. The two bands previously toured together this past summer.

However, Weezer won't be joined by the alt-rockers on some overseas dates, which have just been announced:

6/29 -- London, UK, O2 Academy Brixton
7/2 -- Hamburg, DE, Stadtpark
7/4 -- Utrecht, HL, Tivoli Vredenburg
7/7 -- Bologna, Italy, Sonic Park

Popping drink bottles behind false alarm that sparked stampede at Global Citizen Festival

Photo by Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for Global CitizenA loud noise that sparked a stampede at Saturday's Global Citizen Festival in New York City's Central Park turned out to be the popping of plastic bottles, a New York Police Department source tells ABC News.

The loud sound was mistaken for gunfire by some patrons, leading thousands to rush for the exits; a dozen people sustained injuries in the ensuing panic.

The New York City Police Department confirmed to ABC News that the loud noise, originally reported as being caused by a fallen security barrier, "was the sound of an attendee(s) stepping on and popping a drink bottle(s).“

In a statement to ABC on Sunday, Global Citizen's Hugh Evans said that sometime after 7 p.m., some attendees heard "a loud noise" they believed to be gunshots and raced to exit the park.

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, along with NYPD Assistant Chief Kathleen O'Reilly, took the stage to reassure the understandably frightened crowd: "You're all safe," according to USA Today.

"What happened is a barrier I think fell down...But nobody is trying to hurt anybody," Martin continued. "Of course everyone is worried, we all care about people."

"There's no need to run fast," he warned, according to the newspaper, adding, "There's no need to push people out of the way."

The concert -- which also featured The Weeknd, Shawn MendesCardi B, John Legend, Janelle Monáe and Janet Jackson -- was paused until police were able to restore order.

Global Citizen is a movement to end extreme poverty by 2030. More than 60,000 people have attended the festival since its debut in 2012.

Unreleased track “When Bad Does Good” signals album, box set release from Chris Cornell’s estate

The Chris Cornell Estate/UMeChris Cornell fans will soon be able to celebrate the life and legacy of the late Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman with a massive, extras-packed box set and a separate, 17-track album titled Chris Cornell, both of which will be available November 16.

Ahead of the releases, Cornell's widow, Vicky, has shared the previously unreleased track "When Bad Does Good."  You can hear it now in a lyric video streaming now online.

In addition to the self-titled album, the 64-track box set will include 10 additional unreleased tracks as well as "selections culled from the deep catalogs of his three influential bands -- Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog and Audioslave -- as well as songs from his solo career," according to the estate.

In a statement, Vicky Cornell says, "Since Chris’ sudden passing I have put all my efforts and energy into sharing his music and legacy with his fans from all over the world. I felt we needed to create a special collection to represent all of him -- the friend, husband and father, the risk taker and innovator, the poet and artist. His soaring vocals found their way into the hearts and souls of so many. His voice was his vision and his words were his peace. This album is for his fans."

Among the offerings on the box set will be 10 rare, unreleased live performances from the musician, including his duet with Yusuf/Cat Stevens on “Wild World” and another duet with his daughter, Toni Cornell, on Bob Marley's "Redemption Song."  There's also music from Temple of the Dog’s 25th anniversary reunion show in 2016, and more.

Dave Grohl’s documentary ‘Play’ is now live

Photo: Andrew Stewart

Dave Grohl's new solo project Play, a 23-minute solo track on which the Foo Fighters frontman plays every instrument, is now live.

Directed by Grohl, the project is a two-part documentary that details the inspiration, writing and recording of the track, and emphasizes the importance of children's music education. You can now view it on its official website, on YouTube, or check it out for streaming/purchase.

According to a press release, the docu's first segment is a narrated, "behind -the-scenes discussion of the love of playing music and the lifelong relationship with an instrument -- as well as the process and challenges of recording and filming this unique performance."

The Play film's second part then shifts "to the titular 23-minute, one-man-band instrumental recording on which Grohl plays all seven instruments on the track, all live...for 23 minutes."

After admitting he feels like "a kid in a candy store" with all the instruments arranged before him, Dave says, "Most musicians are always chasing the next challenge, and you never feel satisfied, and you never feel like you've completely mastered the instrument that you're playing. It's always going to be a puzzle. It's always going to be a challenge. It's a beautiful mystery, but once it gets its hooks in you, that's when the obsession and the drive really kick in."

Meanwhile, Grohl and the rest of the Foos recently wrapped a summer tour behind their new album, Concrete and Gold. The band will hit the road again for a fall tour in September.

Chris Cornell’s daughter Toni honors him on Father’s Day with duet of “Nothing Compares 2 U”

ABC/Randy HolmesChris Cornell's daughter Toni marked Father's Day by sharing a recording of her and the late Soundgarden frontman covering "Nothing Compares 2 U," the classic track written by Prince and popularized by Sinead O'Connor.

The emotional tribute was accompanied by a note from the 13-year-old that read, "I love you and miss you so much. You were the best father anyone could ask for. Our relationship was so special, and you were always there for me. You gave me courage when I didn’t have any. You believed in me when I didn’t. I miss your love everyday."

"Recording this song with you was a special and amazing experience I wish I could repeat 100 times over and I know you would too. Happy Father’s Day daddy, nothing compares to you," concluded Toni.

Cornell died in May 2017 at the age of 52 while on tour with Soundgarden, the legendary Seattle grunge band he fronted. His death was ruled a suicide.

In 2015, Cornell debuted an acoustic version of the song "Nothing Compares 2 U." He also shared a studio version following Prince's death in April of 2016. Cornell went on to perform the song live nearly a hundred times.

Toni also performed Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" with OneRepublic on ABC's Good Morning America in August 2017 as a tribute to her dad and Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington, who also died by suicide in July 2017.
