AWOLNATION broke through on the success of their hit single, "Sail." In addition to lighting up the rock charts, the track became a crossover pop hit, despite its dark, heavy vibe. That inspired frontman Aaron Bruno to take that vibe ever further.
"The success of 'Sail' being a darker, weirder song definitely gave me artistic freedom and the license to make a darker, stranger record in Run," Bruno tells Entertainment Weekly. "I was really grateful for that.”
Run, AWOLNATION's sophomore album, was just released this week. The album has given Bruno another hit in the single, "Hollow Moon (Bad Wolf)."
"It's a more personal, vulnerable record than any other that I’ve been associated with in the past," Bruno says. "It's a heavy experience for sure."
The album's title itself is also more vulnerable -- at least more vulnerable that Megalithic Symphony, the title of AWOLNATION's debut. As for what Bruno might be running from on Run, he'd rather not explain, preferring to let people speculate.
"I'm a huge advocate of people interpreting lyrical meanings on their own," he says. "Having said that, I will say we're all running from something or towards something, it seems."
