Nearly a year after its release, "Happier," Bastille's collaborative song with the hit-making DJ Marshmello, just keeps on trucking. The track was recently certified four-times platinum, and is nominated for Choice Electronic/Dance Song at this weekend's Teen Choice Awards.
Speaking to ABC Radio, frontman Dan Smith says that witnessing the success of "Happier," which preceded Bastille's new album, Doom Days, has been "amazing" and "really surreal."
"We finished our record while that song was out, we've done loads of tours," Smith muses. "It's crazy how long it's been out and how it's still around."
Smith calls "Happier" a "fun experiment in songwriting."
"It's always good to collaborate with different people," he says. "It [also] allowed us a bit of space to finish the record that we really love."
Smith recalls one moment in particular that really illustrated how huge "Happier" had become.
"At one point, I was backpacking in India for two weeks with some friends and I heard it coming out of a shop when I was in the back of a tuk-tuk," he remembers. "That was pretty surreal, and an amazing insight into how far it was spreading into different countries."
The 2019 Teen Choice Awards air this Sunday, August 11 on FOX.
