Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus reveals sad origin of “Adam’s Song” lyric

ABC/Paula LoboIf listening to Blink-182's "Adam's Song" doesn't already make you sad, then this newly revealed detail about one of the track's lyrics definitely will.

During a Twitter Q&A session, a fan asked bassist/vocalist Mark Hoppus about the "Adam's Song" line that goes "Remember the time that I spilled the cup/Of apple juice in the hall." In response, Hoppus wrote that it came from an incident that happened when he was a kid and his parents were "headed for divorce."

"They were arguing in their room behind a closed door and I was in the hallway listening, frightened, to their muffled voices," Hoppus said. "Suddenly the noise stopped, their door opened, and I ran, spilling my apple juice."

A track from 1999's Enema of the State, "Adam's Song" was a marked departure from much of Blink's more lighthearted and crude material, tackling subjects such as loneliness, depression and suicidal thoughts. Originally peaking at #2 on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart, it's become one of Blink's most popular and enduring singles.
