CHVRCHES’ New Album to Channel Prince and Michael Jackson

"I think we'll use fewer instruments but ultimately try and do more with them," Doherty says. "When you listen to a Michael Jackson song or a Prince song, you realize there's absolutely nothing in it but an amazing bass line, drums and singing. We want to channel some of that."

To achieve that leaner sound, Doherty says the band will record the currently untitled followup to their debut, 2013's The Bones of What You Believe, in a "s**tty basement project studio" in their hometown of Glasgow, Scotland.

"We were never going to be the band that sold a few records and went to L.A. to spend all our money," he says. "We like taking the same depressing train to the same depressing part of town and locking ourselves away."

CHVRCHES announced that they were working on a new album via Twitter last week.
