U2 is planning to release a collection of short films inspired by the 11 tunes on its new album, Songs of Innocence. Films of Innocence, which is expected to be released on December 9 via iTunes, will feature short movies created by 11 different respected urban artists from various countries.
According to a description posted on iTunes, the filmmakers were picked "for their undisputed ability to capture the imaginations of their audiences, [and] were given complete creative freedom to showcase their personal responses to U2's music." The videos include both animated and live-action sequences, and offer a variety styles and points of view. The film's synopsis also reveals that director "the political murals of Northern Ireland" served as "a reference point" for the project, celebrating "the unique democratic power of urban art."
The artists who contributed films to the release are Oliver Jeffers, Robin Rhode, D*Face, Mode 2, Chloe Early, Ganzeer, Vhils, Maser, ROA, DALeast and Todd James. A trailer showing snippets of each video included in Films of Innocence has been posted on iTunes and also can be viewed at Vimeo.com.
