With a new book coming out and a massive summer tour on the horizon, Corey Taylor has a very busy year ahead of him. Really, he's been busy all year, from touring with Slipknot to releasing "Wither," a song he recorded with rapper Tech N9ne.
"He's a genius, man," Tech N9ne tells ABC Radio of Taylor. "The reason why I say that [is] because I gave him complete autonomy, I gave him full reign, you know, 'Do what you feel,' [on 'Wither']. I didn't give him any guidelines."
"Wither" appears on Tech's latest album, Special Effects, which is out now. One of the things that impressed Tech the most about Taylor's performance on the track was his ability to channel his work with Slipknot and his work with Stone Sour.
"All of the choruses are different pretty much, they are," Tech explains. "The first chorus [Taylor] did an acoustic, soft chorus, and that's wonderful. He's singing, sounds more like Stone Sour. The next two choruses are different, but they're yelling and screaming and rapping like the original Slipknot, or the Slipknot period."
The collaboration between Tech N9ne and Taylor has been in the works for quite some time. Tech is a self-professed "maggot" -- the term Slipknot fans use to describe themselves -- and has been since 1999.
"I know from being a maggot since '99 that I could trust him," Tech tells ABC Radio. "That's it, I knew that I could trust him. And I was f***ing right."
Tech N9ne is heavily involved in the rock world -- in addition to collaborating with Taylor, he also plays guitar heavy festivals like Rock on the Range. As for future rock partnerships, he names Shinedown's Brent Smith, Korn's Jonathan Davis, Trent Reznor, Avenged Sevenfold and Metallica as artists he'd like to work with.
"I've been gunning for Metallica and James Hetfield for a while," Tech says. "I just did something with [bassist Robert] Trujillo for [the] Jaco Pastorius [film Jaco], and Trujillo loves what I did. So Metallica might be in the cards soon."
Taylor's summer tour with Slipknot, dubbed Summer's Last Stand, kicks off July 24 in West Palm Beach, Florida. His new book, You’re Making Me Hate You, will be released on July 7.
