Damon Albarn Says New Gorillaz Album Is “Really Fast”

ParlophoneA new Gorillaz album is officially in the works, and now Damon Albarn has commented on how the cartoon band's new material is shaping up.

"So far, it's really fast, and it's got quite a lot of energy," Albarn tells Rolling Stone. "I've been stuck on piano, somewhere off Broadway, for years now. I want to go somewhere completely opposite of that."

Jamie Hewlett, who handles the design side of Gorillaz, recently told DIY that the band will release new material in 2016, adding that he's currently "at that phase of experimentation."

Gorillaz's last album was The Fall, which was available in 2010 as a free download for members of the band's fan club. It got a wide release the following spring.

Elsewhere in the Rolling Stone interview, Albarn also gave his thoughts on some of today's biggest music stars, including Kanye West and Taylor Swift. He says that West is "pretty unique," while he thinks that Swift is "remarkable, but not unique."

Currently, Albarn is on tour with Blur, including their first-ever headlining performance at New York City's Madison Square Garden on October 23.

"I'm excited," Albarn says of the MSG show. "I've always felt that we deserve at least one reasonably-sized gig in New York. It's something we dreamed about back in the early days -- you'd hear of someone playing there and think, 'Christ, that'd be something!' But we never did it."
