With a title like "Black Sun" and lyrics like "How could something so fair be so cruel?," one might think that the lead single from Kintsugi, Death Cab for Cutie's new album, is about frontman Ben Gibbard's ex-wife, actress Zooey Deschanel. While Gibbard won't confirm that the track is about her, he did tell Billboard that it's "fairly obvious" which songs on Kintsugi are about Deschanel.
"I'm not going to change the way I've always written for fear of people correctly or incorrectly assigning a name and face to these songs," Gibbard says. "I've always written about my life and the lives of people around me, and how everything intersects."
"People turn to us because they don't want to feel alone in their melancholic moments," he continues. "And I'm happy to provide that soundtrack."
Of course, Kintsugi covers topics other than Gibbard's ex-wife. In the song "Good Help (Is So Hard to Find)," he gives his thoughts on the Los Angeles celebrity culture.
"The person I'm singing to is an amalgamation of people I came across living in Los Angeles," Gibbard says. "Being around people in entertainment who are fairly well-known, I noticed all these neuroses and psychoses."
Death Cab for Cutie will be touring in support of Kintsugi, which is out now, beginning April 23 in Kansas City, Missouri.
