The new Deftones album is set to arrive in September.
That's according to drummer Abe Cunningham, who told Download TV that the record, the follow-up to 2016's Gore, is currently in the "mastering" phase.
In May, frontman Chino Moreno told Apple Music that Deftones had been planning a summer release, though the whole COVID-19 situation could obviously change that. Since then, Deftones also postponed their U.S. summer tour to 2021.
Also in the Download TV interview, Cunningham discussed the possibility of Deftones releasing more material from Eros, which features the final recordings from late bassist Chi Cheng. The band had been working on Eros when Cheng suffered severe injuries in a 2008 car crash, which put him in a coma. Deftones then shelved Eros, and Cheng died in 2013.
"We never finished [Eros]," Cunningham said. "And then [Cheng] got in his accident and that's kinda where it just stopped. And quite frankly it's not that good. There's some songs that are really good."
"It's not that it’s not good...there's a lot attached to it as well, you know?" he continued. "And I understand that people are passionate about that and they want to hear Chi's last musical contribution."
Cunningham added that he and his band mates have contemplated releasing a "condensed" version of Eros, possibly as an EP.
"We have to get into all the legalities of it, too, and all that stuff, and also we have to finish it," he said. "But yeah, it would be nice for some of that to see the light of day, definitely."
