Evanescence’s Amy Lee Explains How She Channels “Feel” and “Power” into Her Vocal Performances

Credit: Drew ReynoldsAmy Lee is known for her passionate and emotional vocal performances. The Evanescence frontwoman is in a happier place in her life now than she was when she first wrote some of the band's biggest hits, but she's still able to channel those earlier emotions, albeit from a different mindset.

"I find myself being able to sing about a song that I wrote when I was in my early twenties, singing about some really difficult place that I was in," Lee tells ABC Radio. "And yet I'm standing on stage surrounded by not only support, but this communion between people that happens with all of us loving the music together. The fans, the band, me, all of it, it's become something bigger."

"I'm able to stand there in that moment, instead of thinking about the pain I was writing about all by myself in my room when I wrote the song, thinking about the unity and the power and the gift, and how grateful I am and how cool it is to just not think, and just stand there and feel," she adds. "Just feel that power and be in the middle of it, and it's amazing."

Much of Lee's strength, both in her art and her life, comes from the strength of her family.

"I lost my sister when I was a child, my brother has severe epilepsy -- it's been a life-long thing overcoming that," Lee explains. "And you have to keep being strong, and you have to hold tight together, because if you don't, then the only other option is falling apart."

"I have a wonderful family," she continues. "But I respect and appreciate and love them so much because of the way they've been able to endure some of the really difficult stuff life throws everyone."
