Fall Out Boy draws on a wide range of musical influences, including from the world of hip-hop. The band names A Tribe Called Quest and J. Dilla as some of its favorite rap artists, and frontman Patrick Stump says their music's production and use of sampling has been especially important to his band's own music.
"Initially, when people thought of being aware of hip-hop in rock music, the first thing they thought of was the MC part," Stump tells MTV News. "That's the last thing you should do."
With their latest album, American Beauty/American Psycho, FOB experimented with sampling on songs like "Centuries" and "Uma Thurman."
"It's still this thing that's so taboo in rock music," Stump says of sampling. "It's an art form. You can do such amazing things with it. Those things are very obviously influenced by hip-hop."
To bassist Pete Wentz, the fact that a rock group might use hip-hop as an influence isn't that strange.
"Everyone thinks that you listen to the music that you perform," Wentz says. "Everyone listens to all kinds of different music. I know rappers that listen to rock music. I think everyone's all over the place and has their own tastes."
Fall Out Boy will also be bringing their love of hip-hop with them on tour in the form of rapper Wiz Khalifa, who will join the band on their Boys of Zummer trek, which kicks off in June.
