Dave Grohl's fall in Sweden last week forced Foo Fighters on Tuesday to cancel the remainder of their U.K. and European tour dates, including the band's headlining set at the U.K.'s Glastonbury festival June 26. Fortunately, Glastonbury’s scored a pretty damn good back-up act to fill in: Florence + the Machine.
A note on the Glastonbury website declares, “We’re very pleased to announce that Florence + The Machine will play the Friday night Pyramid headline slot, which Foo Fighters were forced to withdraw from yesterday.”
Glastonbury co-organizer Emily Eavis goes on to say, “Once we heard the sad news that Foo Fighters had been forced to pull out, there was only one person we wanted to call and that was Florence. Every time she has played here she’s done something spectacular and we always knew she would headline the Pyramid one day. I’m delighted she’s agreed to step up to it -- she’s going to smash it!”
While performing in Sweden June 12, Grohl fell off the stage during the second song of the Foos' set. He suffered a broken leg, but he finished the show anyway. In a letter posted to the Foo Fighters website, Grohl reveals he's currently "recovering with 6 metal screws in my leg, thinking about a lifetime of holding up TSA lines from here to Kalamazoo."
Ironically, Florence + the Machine frontwoman Florence Welch is still recovering from breaking her foot during her performance at Coachella last April. She told ABC’s Good Morning America two weeks ago that she’s well on the mend.
Florence + the Machine’s latest album, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 when it was released last week. It’s their first number-one album.
