Gerard Way: Working on “Umbrella Academy” TV series has inspired new music

Courtesy of NetflixGerard Way has revealed that working on Netflix's upcoming adaptation of his The Umbrella Academy comic book series has inspired new music.

Speaking to Billboard, the former leader of My Chemical Romance explains how he came up with a new song the first day of filming.

"We were watching the very first shot, which was a scene between Ellen [Page] and Aidan [Gallagher]," Way remembers. "It's the very last shot of the pilot and they're talking about the end of the world and it's supposed to cut to black."

"And a song popped into my head for that, and I started writing this song that I ended up recording," he continues. "I haven't finished it yet, but it's a song I would love to give to the show."

Way has already given one piece of music to The Umbrella Academy: a rendition of "Hazy Shade of Winter," originally recorded by Simon & Garfunkel and famously covered by The Bangles.

You can hear the song in the new trailer for the show. The track also features Way's former MCR band mate, guitarist Ray Toro.

In the run-up to the end of 2018, Way released three original songs: "Baby You're a Haunted House," "Getting Down the Germs" and "Dasher." He tells Billboard that he originally planned to continue releasing a new song every month, but now says he'll be taking "longer gaps" in between.

The Umbrella Academy premieres on Netflix February 15.
