Green Day's Heart Like a Hand Grenade documentary hits theaters today, October 15. The film follows the band as they record their 2004 career-redefining album American Idiot and includes never-before-seen studio and live footage. In a new clip from Heart Like a Hand Grenade, Green Day perform the American Idiot title track live for the first time. You can watch the clip now on Billboard.com.
"I remember trying to focus on filming them but also being hyper-aware of how the crowd was reacting to the song," director John Roecker tells Billboard. "It was a hold-your-breath moment for me and the reaction was incredible. We were in the studio for nine months, in this bubble, and now the music was being unleashed. After that, I knew it would never be the same again."
In between shots of the inaugural "American Idiot" performance, the clip shows footage of the members of Green Day holding up posters with the song's lyrics on them, in the style of Bob Dylan's iconic, much-copied "Subterranean Homesick Blues" video.
"This year has been an incredible year for music documentaries -- Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone, Elliott Smith -- but this documentary has a happy ending," says Roecker. "Eleven years ago I was fortunate enough to be able to document Green Day recording their album American Idiot, a departure on a very epic scale."
Heart Like a Hand Grenade will be released digitally via Vimeo on Demand on October 16. The film available on DVD November 13.
