Frank Micelotta/Getty ImagesKurt Cobain would've celebrated his 50th birthday today. The iconic Nirvana frontman was born February 20, 1967 in Aberdeen, Washington.

Cobain co-founded Nirvana in 1987 with bassist Krist Novoselic. The band released their debut album, Bleach, in 1989. Nevermind, Nirvana's gigantic breakthrough smash album, and the first with Dave Grohl on drums, arrived two years later. Nirvana released what would be their final album, In Utero, in 1993.

On April 8, 1994, Cobain was found dead at his home in Seattle. His death was ruled a suicide, though conspiracy theories continue to persist. He's survived by his wife, Courtney Love, and his daughter, Frances Bean Cobain.

Nirvana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. Novoselic and Grohl played together during the induction ceremony with a variety of female singers, including Lorde, Joan Jett, Kim Gordon and St. Vincent, handling lead vocals.
