Credit: Michael MullerNickelback's latest album, No Fixed Address, is up for Album of the Year at this Sunday's Juno Awards, Canada's equivalent to the Grammy Awards. In fact, every single Nickelback album since their 2001 breakthrough album, Silver Side Up, has been nominated for Album of the Year at the Juno Awards. While the band experimented a bit on No Fixed Address, Nickelback's members say the album stays true to the band's sound.
"Topic wise, we kind of touched on a few other things [on No Fixed Address], so it was good that way, and stylistic-wise obviously it's kind of stretched out a little bit," guitarist Ryan Peake tells ABC Radio. "Hopefully the fans come with us for this voyage, but, yeah, ultimately it's going to sound like Nickelback."
One major difference between No Fixed Address and the rest of Nickelback's Juno-nominated catalog, as well as the band's first two albums, is the presence of rapper Flo Rida, who guests on the track "Got Me Runnin' Round."
"A friend of mine who was working on ["Got Me Runnin' Round"] with us was also working on [Flo Rida's] record, and he went and played it for him, and Flo Rida said he wanted to be involved, like he would like to do a rap on the song," frontman Chad Kroeger tells ABC Radio. "I just thought that was really cool. We'd never had anybody rap on a song, or want to rap on one of our songs."
While arranging the collaboration, Kroeger remembers it being a prime opportunity to try something new.
"I just thought, you know, isn't that what we're trying to do more and more, is step out of our comfort zone and attempt new things?" Kroeger says. "That's what creating and making music's all about."
Stepping out of their comfort zone seemed to work out for the band, as No Fixed Address gave Nickelback their fifth top-five album on the Billboard 200, as well as their latest Juno Album of the Year nomination. Nickelback also is up for Group of the Year and the Fan Choice Award at this year's Juno Awards. As for the secret of their long-running success, the band is just happy to be along for the ride.
"Let's not kid ourselves, we hope the entire audience is under the illusion that we know what we're doing," laughs Kroeger.
The 2015 Juno Awards will be held March 15 in Hamilton, Ontario. Other nominees include Arcade Fire and Lorde. A full list of nominees can be found at JunoAwards.ca.
