Metallica Dissects “Moth into Flame” in “Song Exploder” Podcast

ABC/Randy HolmesMetallica dives deep into the background of their single "Moth into Flame" in a new episode of the Song Exploder podcast.

In discussing "Moth into Flame," frontman James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich talk about how the Master of Puppets track "Disposable Heroes" influenced their songwriting approach and how the playing style of Mastodon's Brann Dailor inspired Ulrich's own drum fills. Additionally, Hetfield talks about how the song's lyrics deal with his own feelings about the trappings of fame.

"I've grown up being in the spotlight basically, from like 18 on," Hetfield says. "I don't know what it's like to go hang out in a festival, just in the middle of it all and just enjoy it. And I got lost in drink and the other excesses of the road. You can get lost in that and forget why you're doing stuff. It's a complete loss of reality."

"Moth into Flame" is a single from Metallica's new album Hardwired...to Self-Destruct.
