In the chorus of Metric's new single "The Shade," frontwoman Emily Haines sings, "I want it all." "All" is a good word for the newly released "The Shade" video, which includes footage of everything from riot police and melting ice caps to the Hollywood sign, plus a shot at the Billboard Hot 100 -- here referred to as the "Bored Hot 100." "We live in a world inundated with imagery," Haines tells Rolling Stone. "Pictures, videos and graphics permeate our consciousness all hours of the day. That's what we wanted to capture in 'The Shade': humanity and nature caught in patterns and loops of beauty, destruction and decay."
"When I say, 'I want it all,' this is what I'm talking about," she continues. "Look at the world around you. Don't shy away from what you see, even if it's ugly. Own up to yourself and be prepared to be thrown your share of shade."
"The Shade" is the lead single from Metric's forthcoming album, Pagans in Vegas, which will be released September 18.
