Credit: James Minchin IIIFor their new album, Wilder Mind, Mumford & Sons ditched their signature banjo-driven folk rock sound for electric guitars. Even though they cast aside the instrument that made them famous, guitarist Winston Marshall wants you to know that the band harbors no ill will towards the banjo.
"It wasn't 'f**k the banjo' at all," Marshall tell Q magazine. “We just did whatever we wanted, musically. We always thought of ourselves as a rock band playing folk instruments. Although we might be completely deluded!"
Along with the change in their musical style, Mumford & Sons changed their clothing style. New press photos show the band has traded waistcoats and suspenders for trench coats and leather jackets. While the shift in musical style was not meant to devalue their older material, Marshall thinks their shift in clothing style is definitely a step up.
"We always took the music seriously, but we dressed like bloody clowns!" he says.
Wilder Mind will be released on May 4.
