Even though Nate Ruess is set to release his solo album, Grand Romantic, on June 16, he insists his Grammy-winning band, fun., is far from over.
“We are just taking a break,” the singer tells Billboard. “A solo album takes a long time, and it's where all my thoughts are right now.”
Ruess said his new album -- which explores old relationships as well as his new one with designer Charlotte Ronson -- is “the best thing I think I have ever done.”
“I caught myself in a great head space. My current relationship feels like it's not letting up; it clicks, and I'm learning so much,” he said. "But to me, love means all the people around you. It wasn't necessarily about one relationship. I'm very thankful for the people I have in my life, and I think that was a big catalyst.”
The album also explores heavy themes of religion, mortality, depression and thoughts of suicide.
“Life is tough. I think life is tough for everybody,” said Ruess, who said he never attempted suicide personally. “My life is still as tough as it ever was. I want to acknowledge all the highs and lows when they happen.”
