The musician, born Scott Putesky, was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2013.

The news of Putesky's death was confirmed by his former band, Jack Off Jill. "Saying good bye to Scott, friend, band mate, artist, hero," reads a statement posted to their Facebook.

Manson also paid tribute to his former band mate in an Instagram post, writing, "Scott Putesky and I made great music together. We had our differences over the years, but I will always remember the good times more. Everyone should listen to 'Man That You Fear' in his honor. That was our favorite."

The shock rocker and Putesky co-founded Marilyn Manson, originally called Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids in 1989. Putesky created his stage name by combining Daisy Duke from Dukes of Hazzard and serial killer David Berkowitz. Putesky left Marilyn Manson in 1996, halfway through the recording of Antichrist Superstar.
