Red Hot Chili Peppers begin their North American tour supporting their new album The Getaway tonight in San Antonio, Texas. The massive trek won't wrap up until July, and frontman Anthony Kiedis will make sure he's well-prepared for every show.
"The physicality of our shows is such that there's no way you're gonna make that happen without preparation," says Kiedis in a new video. "Because I sing loud for two hours during a show, I have to spend a lot of time getting my voice together with the right food and the right warm-ups, and then I have to run or stretch or do push-ups or wrestle Flea or something to get my blood flowing."
Kiedis' pre-show ritual also includes a specific eating schedule.
"I have to eat three hours before, so I have protein in my blood stream, but I won't vomit all over the microphone," he says. "Because if I eat right before I play, I'm not keeping it down. It's too intense, it's like playing an entire basketball game or something while you're singing and playing instruments."
In order to prepare mentally for the show, Kiedis says that he and the rest of the Chili Peppers will get in a room and listen to music together.
"It could be Funkadelic, it could be Patti Smith, it could be anything," he explains. "But we kind of get together and get on the same wavelength."
The Red Hot Chili Peppers North American tour concludes July 1 in Chicago.
