Last year, Soundgarden released a three disc compilation called Echo of Miles: Scattered Tracks Across the Path, which assembled 25 years of B-sides, covers, instrumentals, demos and other rarities. Now, the band will release the collection on vinyl as a six LP set with unique art.
As guitarist Kim Thayil tells it, it was only a matter of time before Soundgarden released Echo of Miles on their preferred format. Throughout their career, the band has always fought to release their material on vinyl.
"By the time Superunknown came out, the record company was hesitant to put out vinyl, and we were like, 'No, no. We're vinyl guys. This is the way we came up. We've got to release Superunknown on vinyl,'" Thayil tells Rolling Stone. "So, of course, it's a double-album and so is Down on the Upside and King Animal."
Echo of Miles will continue that proud tradition when it is released on vinyl May 19. As far as Thayil is concerned, the collection is just like any other Soundgarden studio album.
"These are as valuable as anything else that we put on the record," Thayil says. "That's what Echo of Miles addresses. Some reviewers might hear it as outtakes or simply B-sides, but these are Soundgarden songs that were never present on a Soundgarden album."
