"[For] Christmas and New Year's holidays, we go to Rome every year," Cornell tells ABC News Radio of his family's holiday traditions.

"It's a pretty amazing thing because the Vatican is there," he continues. "I went to Catholic school but I'm not Catholic -- don't care about it. But it's amazing to be in a city where there's two million people outside on the street walking around and are sort of part of this event. It's always like an incredible, energetic feeling."

According to Cornell, Rome also has one other quality that's very important to the Christmas aesthetic.

"[Rome is] also kind of a romantic place to have a holiday like Christmas," he says. "If there's a city that embraces it, that's it."

Soundgarden's latest release, a rarities collection entitled Echo of Miles: Scattered Tracks Across the Path, is out now.
