Taking Back Sunday previews “taxing,” “awesome” & coin-influenced 20th anniversary tour

Credit: Natalie EscobedoMonday night, Taking Back Sunday will kick off their 20th anniversary tour in Houston, Texas. Speaking to ABC Radio, bassist Shaun Cooper says the band will be playing "super long sets" on the tour, during which they'll play their 2002 debut album Tell All Your Friends in its entirety, as well as tons of songs from throughout their two decade-long career.

"We'll probably be doing about two hours every night," Cooper says. "It's gonna be taxing, and it's gonna be an awesome time."

For cities in which they're playing two shows on the tour, TBS will also play either 2004's Where You Want to Be or 2006's Louder Now in full as well. That decision will be made by a special commemorative coin, which the band will flip in front of the audience before the show.

Cooper says that the coin is "official" and "heavy," and, as it turns out, quite expensive to make.

"It is a real-deal thing," he says.

Cooper jokes that the coin will be protected in a "briefcase with a handcuff on it that will be attached to our tour manager at all times."

"In case anything goes wrong, anyone tries to get it, they're not gonna get it from him," the bassists says.

"No one's messing with our coin," adds drummer Mark O'Connell.

No matter what the coin decides, however, Cooper assures that all the hits will be played.

"Whatever songs we leave off that night, we'll be sure to cover all the bases," he says. "So on a Where You Want to Be night, you're still gonna hear 'MakeDamnSure.' We're not gonna leave that out because 'The coin didn't say so!'"
