Credit: Scarlet PageThe Smashing Pumpkins' seminal third album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was released on October 23, 1995, 20 years ago today. The double-album was the band's first, and, so far, only, release to debut at number one on the Billboard 200.
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was stacked with some of The Smashing Pumpkins' biggest hits, including "Tonight, Tonight," "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" and "1979." The band earned seven Grammy nominations tied to the album, including Album of the Year and Alternative Music Performance, plus Record of the Year and Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for "1979." They came away with one win in the Best Hard Rock Performance category for "Bullet with Butterfly Wings."
Since its release, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness has sold more than 10 million copies, earning the album diamond certification by the Recording Industry Association of America.
After Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, The Smashing Pumpkins released six more albums, most recently 2014's Monuments to an Elegy. Frontman Billy Corgan is the sole permanent original member still in the band. Over the summer, the Pumpkins and Marilyn Manson teamed up for a co-headlining tour called The End Times.
