ABC/Paula LoboWeezer launches a North American tour Friday night in Louisville, Kentucky. Once again, they'll be joined by fellow alt-rock vets Pixies, with whom they also toured last summer. Speaking to ABC Radio, Weezer drummer Patrick Wilson describes what makes the two bands such a good pairing.
"Well we love the Pixies, they were a huge influence on us when we were starting," Wilson explains. "It's just a nice package to go see. Their tunes are so good, and they're so good every night that I watch them every night, it's fantastic."
On their 2018 summer tour, Weezer had plenty of elaborate production elements, including a recreation of their iconic "Buddy Holly" video. Wilson says the band will continue to roll out "interesting" production for this run.
"I think there's a boat involved," Wilson says. "So we'll see what happens with that."
Weezer will be supporting their latest color-themed self-titled effort, the Black Album, as well as their surprise Teal Album covers collection, which features renditions of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid," TLC's "No Scrubs" and, of course, Toto's "Africa."
For Wilson, his favorite covers on Teal were Weezer's takes on Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" and ELO's "Mr. Blue Sky."
"I hadn't even really know that song by ELO, but I'm really glad we did it," Wilson says. "I think it probably came out the best of all the songs on the record."
