Walk the Moon Reveals Origin of “Shut Up and Dance”

Image Courtesy of RCA RecordsThe titles of Walk the Moon's new album, Talking Is Hard, and its lead single, "Shut Up and Dance," are quite straightforward. In the case of "Shut Up and Dance," the chorus came from a real life event.

"We were in Los Angeles, trying to write songs, and I was stuck," frontman Nicholas Petricca tells Billboard. "For a breather I went out with my girlfriend to the Echo; they have this awesome party where they play Motown and funk. We were at the bar, and it was taking forever to get a drink. I was frustrated because there was great music playing and I wanted to be out there. She was like, 'Shut up and dance with me!'

As for Talking Is Hard, that comes from the fact that talking is indeed difficult.

"People of our generation are scared to express ourselves" says Petricca. "We're stuck on our phones communicating with people on the other side of the world, but find it hard to hold a conversation with people across the table. It's about getting out of your head."

In other Walk the Moon news, "Shut Up and Dance" may have found its true calling. The single is used as the background music for a viral video featuring a supercut of famous dance moves from movies. You can watch the video on YouTube.

Walk the Moon is currently dancing through North America on their tour in support of Talking Is Hard. Following that, the band will travel to Europe before returning to the U.S. in June for another round of dates.
