Watch Halsey Go Behind the Scenes of “New Americana” Video

Image Courtesy of AstralwerksHalsey channels her inner Katniss Everdeen in her "New Americana" video, which is fitting, since the song has become a rallying cry for adolescent rebellion. In a behind-the-scenes video for "New Americana," which you can watch now at Noisey.com, Halsey explains the message she's trying to convey in the song.

"The whole idea of 'New Americana' is a new generation that's not afraid of anything," she says in the clip. "It's this idea of everyone's your ally."

On the chorus to "New Americana," Halsey sings, "We are the New Americana/High on legal marijuana/Raised on Biggie and Nirvana," but that line doesn't define the song's entire meaning.

"It's not about smoking weed and listening to rap music or grunge music," laughs Halsey. "It's about this idea of a new culture that has the opportunity to take counter-culture and turn it into something bigger."

"New Americana" is a single from Halsey's debut album, Badlands, which is out now.
