Watch Metallica members cover “Sweet Home Alabama” in Birmingham

ABC/Randy HolmesEarlier this week, Metallica's tour made a stop in Birmingham, Alabama. During the band's regular "doodle" segment, they decided to perform a cover of -- what else? -- Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama."

While the doodle is usually just a jam between guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo, frontman James Hetfield couldn't resist the iconic licks of "Sweet Home Alabama," and hopped on stage to handle lead vocals. You can watch official footage of the cover now on YouTube.

After the "Sweet Home" performance, Hammett and Trujillo then segued into an instrumental cover of Black Sabbath's "Iron Man."

Metallica's tour continues Thursday in Nashville.
