Bono serenades restaurant crowd while comforting crying child

Olaf HeineBono's voice has been called many things, but now we can add "soothing" to that list.

Last week, the members of U2 had just started playing a very intimate and unplugged version of "One" in a Paris restaurant called Refettorio, when a small child started crying. Without hesitating, Bono picked up the girl and held her, bouncing her gently as he started singing.

In a video posted to Instagram by Massimo Bottura, the restaurant's founder, the girl seemed comforted and stopped crying.

Bottura thanked U2 in the caption of the video for their support of Refettorio, an upscale restaurant that exclusively serves free meals to those in need.

U2 is currently on the European leg of their Songs of Experience + Innocence tour, which wraps up November 13 in Berlin.  That show is a make-up date for one the band was forced to cancel several weeks ago after Bono lost his voice.

Cranberries singer Dolores O’Riordan died by drowning, inquest reveals

Image credit: Andy EarlCranberries singer Dolores O'Riordan's death last January was the result of drowning and extreme alcohol intoxication, according to testimony at a coroner's inquest in London Thursday.

The coroner testified that O'Riordan, 46, died as a result of a "tragic accident", according to the BBC.

O'Riordan was found dead the morning of Monday, January 15, in her room at the Park Lane Hilton Hotel in London.  A police constable who was at the scene testified Thursday, "I saw Mrs. O'Riordan submerged in the bath with her nose and mouth fully under the water."

O'Riordan's blood-alcohol level was measured to be four times over the legal limit for driving.  Five mini-bottles of alcohol and a bottle of champagne were found in the hotel room room as well as bottles of prescription medication.  "Therapeutic" amounts of the latter were also found in O'Riordan's blood, the BBC reports.

O'Riordan was taking medication to treat bipolar disorder, the inquest heard.  O'Riordan herself announced in 2017 that she'd been diagnosed with the illness.

O'Riordan would have been 47 today.  In a statement Thursday, the band said, in part, "Dolores will live on eternally in her music.  To see how much of a positive impact she had on people's lives has been a source of great comfort to us.  We'd like to say thank you to all of our fans for the outpouring of messages and their continued support during this very difficult time."

O'Riordan's distinctive, lilting voice led the Cranberries to international fame in the '90s, thanks to hits like "Linger," "Dreams" and "Zombie." They sold over 40 million records worldwide before taking a hiatus in 2003.  In 2009, they reformed and released the album Roses in 2012.

O'Riordan also released two solo albums: 2007's Are You Listening? and 2009's No Baggage.

Bono loses voice in Berlin, U2 reschedules show

Olaf HeineU2 was forced to cut short their show in Berlin on Saturday night after Bono lost his voice.  Fortunately, the singer says it's nothing serious and the band will return to Berlin in November to make it up to fans.

A statement on U2's website on Saturday from Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen Jr. and The Edge read, "We're so sorry for tonight's cancellation.  Bono was in great form and great voice prior to the show and we were all looking forward to the second night in Berlin, but after a few songs, he suffered a complete loss of voice."

"We don't know what has happened and we're taking medical advice.  As always, we appreciate our audience's understanding and all our fans' support in Berlin and those who traveled from afar. We will update you very soon."

On Sunday, Bono posted a statement saying, "I've seen a great doctor and with his care I’ll be back to full voice for the rest of the tour. So happy and relieved that anything serious has been ruled out."

He added, "My relief is tempered by the knowledge that the Berlin audience were so inconvenienced. There was an amazing atmosphere in the house, it was going to be one of those unforgettable nights but not for this reason…We can’t wait to get back there on November 13th."

A handwritten note from Bono added, "P.S. to those who sang 'Red Flag Day' for me last night, thanks, there are some high notes in there.  As always, 'You take us higher.'"

"Red Flag Day" is a track on U2's latest album Songs of Experience.

The band's next show is Tuesday in Cologne, Germany.

Clive Davis, who signed Aretha to Arista Records in 1980:  "I’m absolutely devastated by Aretha’s passing. She was truly one of a kind. She was more than the Queen of Soul. She was a national treasure to be cherished by every generation throughout the world."

Paul McCartney: "Let’s all take a moment to give thanks for the beautiful life of Aretha Franklin, the Queen of our souls, who inspired us all for many many years. She will be missed but the memory of her greatness as a musician and a fine human being will live with us forever. Love Paul"

Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin dead at 76

Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images

Aretha Franklin, the pastor's daughter who became the undisputed Queen of Soul over a career that spanned more than five decades, has died of advanced pancreatic cancer, ABC News has confirmed.

"It is with deep and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Aretha Louise Franklin, the Queen of Soul," read a statement from her rep.

"Franklin, 76 years old, passed away on Thursday morning, August 16 at 9:50 a.m. at her home in Detroit, MI, surrounded by family and loved ones. Franklin’s official cause of death was due to advance pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type, which was confirmed by Franklin’s Oncologist, Dr. Philip Phillips of Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, MI."

“In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds," the statement continued.

“We have been deeply touched by the incredible outpouring of love and support we have received from close friends, supporters and fans all around the world. Thank you for your compassion and prayers. We have felt your love for Aretha and it brings us comfort to know that her legacy will live on. As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time.”

Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days.

Franklin's health had been a concern for the past few years, causing a spate of concert cancellations.  In 2017, she appeared alarmingly thin but claimed it was a side effect of an unspecified medication. After announcing she was retiring from the road in 2017, Franklin still scheduled shows for 2018 but in March, she was ordered by her doctors to cancel all shows and rest for two months.  Despite rumors of serious health problems, she's never publicly spoken about her ailments.

Merely saying that Franklin was one of the greatest vocalists of all time hardly seems adequate to describe her influence and impact -- her voice was officially declared a natural resource by her home state of Michigan.  In 2015, President Barack Obama said of Franklin: "Nobody embodies more fully the connection between the African-American spiritual, the blues, R&B, rock and roll -- the way that hardship and sorrow were transformed into something full of beauty and vitality and hope."

Franklin started her music career early, singing gospel music as a child at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit where her father, C.L. Franklin, was minister.  In 1960, at the age of 18, she signed to Columbia Records and experienced some success, especially on the R&B charts.  But it wasn't until 1967, when she signed to Atlantic Records, that her career really took off.

For Atlantic, Franklin recorded-now classics "Respect," "Chain of Fools," "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," and "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)," which helped her cross over to the pop charts.  She won her first Grammy in 1968, the same year she appeared on the cover of TIME magazine.  She'd eventually go on to win a total of 20 Grammys, including special Grammys awarded outside of competition, and chart more than 73 songs on the Billboard Hot 100.

Franklin was also part of the civil rights movement of the sixties and has been called "the voice of Black America."  Having met Martin Luther King Jr. through her father, himself a noted civil rights leader, she sang at events with Dr. King and her signature hit,  "Respect," became a civil rights anthem.  When King was assassinated in 1968, Franklin performed "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" at his funeral.

Aretha's hits continued through the '70s but she left Atlantic records in 1979, signing to Clive Davis' label, Arista, in 1980.  That same year, she made her unforgettable appearance as a waitress in The Blues Brothers.  Her 1982 album, Jump to It, returned her to the pop charts for the first time in six years.  She remained with Arista for more than 20 years, racking up hits like "Who's Zoomin' Who," "Freeway of Love" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash." In 1987, she was the first female performer inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

During this time, Aretha also started recording duets with younger artists, including Eurythmics, Whitney Houston, Michael McDonald, Mary J. Blige, Elton John and George Michael, the latter with whom she scored the 1987 #1 smash duet "I Knew You Were Waiting for Me."

In 1994, Franklin received the Kennedy Center Honors, at the time the youngest person to be so honored. That same year, she received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.  She was also the recipient of the National Medal of the Arts and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, among countless other awards.

While Franklin's musical output covered rock, soul, pop, R&B and gospel, in 1998 she proved she really could sing anything by belting out the operatic aria "Nessun Dorma" at the Grammy Awards, filling in for an ailing Luciano Pavarotti.

Over the past 15 years, Franklin performed at a number of high-profile events.  In 2006, she sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XL in Detroit with Aaron Neville and Dr. John.  She performed "My Country 'Tis of Thee" at President Barack Obama's inauguration, where her fanciful hat received nearly as much attention as her vocal performance.

Franklin continued to release albums throughout the 2000s, including a 2014 album that featured her singing songs by other female artists including Adele, Barbra Streisand and Alicia Keys.  Her version of "Rolling in the Deep" gave her her 100th charted song on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Recently, Franklin had spoken of an album she'd been working on with Stevie Wonder, and early in 2018, it was announced that Jennifer Hudson would portray her in a biopic.

Bless the rains: Toto releases cover of Weezer’s “Hash Pipe”

Universal Music GroupThe circle is finally complete. Following Weezer's viral cover of Toto's "Africa," the veteran pop-rock band has released their take on Rivers Cuomo and company's "Hash Pipe," available now on digital outlets.

Weezer shared their version of "Africa," as well as a cover of Toto's "Rosanna," in May following a long-running campaign stated by a teenage fan. The "Africa" cover has since become a big hit for Weezer, giving them their first number-one single on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart in 10 years.

"We were blown away at the response Weezer got doing our old songs," says Toto guitarist Steve Lukather. "They did a good job too...It seemed only right that WE, Toto, did a version of one of their songs, so we started digging around, listening to a bunch of their music, which I have grown to like a lot."

Toto previously debuted the "Hash Pipe" cover live during a show in Vancouver last month.

Weezer, meanwhile, has been rocking "Africa" all summer on tour, and during a stop in Los Angeles, the band was joined by none other than "Weird Al" Yankovic to perform the much-beloved '80s hit.

U2 dedicate “Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of” to Anthony Bourdain during Apollo Theater show

ABC/Randy HolmesU2 took a moment to pay respect to the late Anthony Bourdain during an intimate show at the Apollo Theater in New York City on Monday night.

According to the New York Daily NewsBono and company dedicated "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of" to the Parts Unknown host, who was found dead of an apparent suicide by hanging on Friday. The band called Bourdain "a great storyteller who had stories he couldn't tell us" before performing the song.

The choice of song was profound, as Bono has mentioned that he wrote the track -- from the 2000 album All That You Cant Leave Behind -- about late INXS singer Michael Hutchence, whose death in 1998 was also ruled a suicide.

During Monday night's show, Bono also told the audience, "It’s been a funny, not funny few years. We lost a lot of inspiring, useful people. And gained a few useless people. It’s hard to lose a friend, to lose a mate. This band has been through that.”

Bourdain was an avid fan of rock music, having guests like Iggy Pop and, recently, System of a Down singer Serj Tankian on his popular CNN show.
