Beck Responds to Kanye West Grammy Comments: “He Deserves to Be on Stage as Much as Anybody”

Images Courtesy of Def Jam; Peter HapakBeck was certainly not a loser at Sunday night's Grammy Awards. In addition to taking home the Best Rock Album award, Beck's Morning Phase won Album of the Year, upsetting favorites Beyonce and Sam Smith. His Album of the Year win immediately became notorious when rapper Kanye West walked on stage in apparent protest of Beyonce not winning the award.  Initially, it appeared Kanye was only joking, riffing on his infamous 2009 MTV VMA performance when he stormed the stage after Beyonce lost to Taylor Swift.  Turns out, Kanye wasn't joking.

"I just know is if the Grammys want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us," West told E! Online after Beck's win. "Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé, and at this point, we tired of it."

For his part, Beck doesn't appear to be bothered.  He tells US Weekly, "I was just so excited [West] was coming up. He deserves to be on stage as much as anybody.  How many great records has he put out in the last five years right?"

When asked whether he thought Beyonce should've won Album on the Year, Beck replied, "Absolutely. I thought she was going to win. Come on, she's Beyonce!"

"You can't please everybody, man," Beck continued. "I still love [West] and think he's genius. I aspire to do what he does."
