Billie Joe Armstrong Reveals His Goal for 2016

ABC/Fred LeeBillie Joe Armstrong is a man with a mission. The Green Day frontman has taken to Twitter to announce his goal for 2016.

"My mission for 2016? To destroy the phrase 'pop-punk' forever," writes Armstrong.

Green Day has often been saddled with the "pop-punk" label. Following the band's mainstream success, especially with their 2004 rock opera American Idiot, some criticized Green Day for straying from their "real" punk roots.

When Fall Out Boy -- another band described as pop-punk -- inducted Green Day into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, Pete Wentz called American Idiot "insanely...punk rock." Wentz ended his speech by declaring, "Let some Reddit feed argue the definition of punk rock. Me? I already have my answer."

As for any other goals Armstrong may have for 2016, perhaps a new Green Day album will be one of them, too. On Christmas Eve, the band released a surprise single called "Xmas Time of the Year." Green Day's last album was 2012's ¡Tré!
