The 21-year-old Canadian artist, born Isaiah Faber, has a top-five track on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart with the single "death bed (coffee for your head)" alongside beabadoobee, and his new EP poems of the past includes a remix of the tune featuring one of his favorite bands, Blink-182.
Faber tells ABC Audio that the collaboration with Blink came about after he learned they were both on the same label.
"I was really hyped about it" he says. "I did not think it would happen this quickly."
Powfu's sound combines elements of hip hop and lo-fi singer-songwriter, and you can also hear Blink's influence on his music, especially in his vocals.
"I love punk vocals," Faber says. "I feel like they just sound the best compared to any other type of music. So whenever I sing, it kinda has a punk sound to it."
Faber adds that he has a particular affinity for Blink's signature 1999 album, Enema of the State.
"I like how they did their own thing," Faber says. "I listen to [Enema] on repeat. A lot of their lyrics, as well, are just kinda edgy I guess, you wouldn't hear anybody else say the stuff that they say."
"I love the hard-hitting drums and just the punk melodies and stuff," he continues. "I love it all."
