Credit: Jamie WeilandABC News has confirmed that Scott Weiland is dead.

The former frontman of Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, who had been touring with his new band The Wildabouts, apparently died before a scheduled concert Thursday night in Minnesota.

Weiland was 48.

Weiland's manager Tom Vitorino confirmed the news to ABC News Radio, as tributes to the singer began to appear online.

The Bloomington, Minnesota Police Department would only confirm that a a deceased adult male was found in an RV outside a motel in Bloomington.

The vocalist had battled substance abuse issues for years, though it was legal scuffling with his former STP bandmates that led to Weiland's termination in 2013.

Chester Bennington, the vocalist for Linkin Park, began playing with Stone Temple Pilots in May of 2013, billing themselves as Stone Temple Pilots with Chester Bennington as they toured and released the EP High Rise that October.

He recently stepped down from STP, however.

Incidentally, many music fans first got wind of Weiland's passing from Dave Navarro, in a since-deleted tweet.

Other tributes followed, including Aerosmith's Joe Perry, who remembered Weiland as a "gifted performer," and Ryan Adams, who posted a video of STP's "Sour Girl," and pleaded, "Universe, please take care of him."
