Green Day to Receive Global Icon Award at 2016 MTV EMAs

Credit: Frank MaddocksGreen Day's world dominance will be recognized at the 2016 Europe Music Awards. The punk trio will be honored with the Global Icon Award at this year's ceremony.

"Green Day is without question, one of the worlds' most influential rock bands. For over two decades, they've introduced new generations of fans from around the globe to their impassioned lyrics and raw musical power," says Bruce Gillmer of Viacom International Media Networks. Previous Global Icon winners include Ozzy Osbourne, Queen and Duran Duran.

In addition to being officially named a Global Icon, Green Day will be performing at the EMAs, too. Billie Joe Armstrong and company are also up for awards in two categories: Best Rock and Best Live.

Other MTV EMA nominees include Twenty One Pilots, Coldplay, Metallica, Muse, Radiohead and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Kings of Leon will also perform at the ceremony.

The 2016 MTV EMAs will take place November 6 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
