Hozier may be from Ireland, but he's a nominee at this weekend's American Music Awards. The "Take Me to Church" singer will be competing with Fall Out Boy and WALK THE MOON for the Favorite Artist -- Alternative Rock prize, which, like all of the AMAs, is decided by fan votes.
"I'd be thrilled," Hozier tells ABC Radio of potentially winning an AMA. "I am shocked, my fans on that one, like my Twitter feed has just been mental the last couple months. I've got incredibly dedicated fans. But I think that'd be something else, wouldn't it?"
An AMA win would be one more highlight in a year full of them for Hozier. His hit single "Take Me to Church" spent a then record-tying 23 straight weeks atop Billboard's Hot Rock Songs chart, and was nominated for Song of the Year at the 2015 Grammys. Despite the many accolades he and "Take Me to Church" have received, Hozier continues to be in awe of the song's success.
"It was a huge surprise to me that the music connected to such a wide range of people," he says.
As for what attracted so people to "Take Me to Church," Hozier can only guess.
"Because it was so different, maybe people were drawn to it a little bit," he tells ABC Radio. "I dunno how it ended up in a kind of a top-10 landscape, but it might have been it was just different sonically, it was different lyrically and I dunno, I just tried to be honest with it."
If Hozier were to win an AMA Sunday night, unfortunately he won't be in the building to accept it.
"You're often scheduling tours before you find out that you're nominated for something," he explains. "So I think we might be on stage somewhere else in the world at the time, which is a shame."
While Hozier won't be in attendance, the show will feature performances from WALK THE MOON and Coldplay, who will be playing their new single "Adventure of a Lifetime."
The American Music Awards will air live from the Microsoft Theater Sunday, November 22 at 8:00pm ET on ABC.
