Mumford & Sons’ Marcus Mumford recalls “hugely embarrassing” royal wedding yawn: “It was a long morning”

ABC/Randy HolmesImagine you've scored a coveted invitation to a royal wedding. Now imagine one of the many cameras at said wedding catches you mid-yawn during the ceremony. If you also have an affinity for banjos, you now know how Marcus Mumford feels.

The Mumford & Sons frontman was photographed yawning during Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle's nuptials earlier this year, an experience the musician says was "hugely embarrassing."

"I got more text messages for that than I got for headlining Glastonbury," Mumford tells Rolling Stone. "It was a long morning."

Since the wedding was attended by many celebrities and notable names, Mumford thought that he'd be in the clear when it came to any camera attention.

"I was convinced that there wouldn't be many cameras on us, because there's all these...famous people in the room," Mumford says. "I said to my wife [actress Carey Mulligan] at one point, 'Give me a smooch, babe.' She goes, 'No way, there's cameras everywhere.' And then, of course, they caught me yawning."

"Amazing wedding, though," he adds.

Despite his wedding faux pas, Mumford closed out 2018 strong with the release of Mumford & Sons' new album Delta, which arrived in November. The band will kick off 2019 with a tour of Australia and New Zealand, followed by U.S. run that launches in February.
