The Unlikely Candidates earn first ‘Billboard’ number-one with “Novocaine”

Red MusicThe Unlikely Candidates have completed their unlikely journey to the top of a Billboard chart.

The group's single "Novocaine" has reached number one on the Alternative Songs chart, giving them their first leader on any Billboard ranking.

"It's funny that the song we wrote about being a slacker ended up being our highest-achieving one ever," frontman Kyle Morris tells Billboard. "I think that's also why it did so well, though. Everyone can relate to being a bit of a slacker now and then."

It took 33 weeks for "Novocaine" to take the top spot on Alternative Songs, which ties Fitz and the Tantrums' "Out of My League" for the second-longest trip to number one in the chart's over 30-year history. The longest? Meg Myers' cover of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill," which took 42 weeks before finally conquering Alternative Songs earlier this year.
