Paolo PellegrinU2’s Bono says he’s still unable to play the guitar, more than five months after he suffered multiple injuries, including a broken left arm, a fractured left hand, a fractured shoulder blade and a fractured left eye socket in a bicycle accident in New York’s Central Park.
In an interview with The New York Times at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, British Columbia, where the band has been rehearsing in anticipation of the May 14 launch of its iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE tour, the singer declared, “It feels like I have somebody else’s hand.”
Bono held up his left hand for the Times reporter and admitted, “But this is the hard bit because I can’t play guitar.” He then looked at the other members of the band and remarked with a half-smile, “They don’t seem to mind.”
Pointing out the curled fourth finger and pinky of his left hand, Bono tells the Times, “I can’t bend these...”
The singer says another part of his left hand “is like rigor mortis,” adding, “but they say that nerves heal about a millimeter a week, so in about 13 months I should know if it’s coming back.”
The U2 frontman admitted his shoulder is better and “the face is better,” but his forearm and elbow are still numb in areas.
The tour kicks off May 14 at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia.
