Dave Grohl Does Not Appear in First Cut of “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck”

Image Courtesy of The End of Music, LLC/HBOThe first fully authorized Kurt Cobain documentary, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, made its premiere this past weekend at the Sundance Film Festival, but one notable person was absent from the film -- Dave Grohl.

Director Brett Morgen explained that while he did interview the former Nirvana drummer and current Foo Fighters frontman for the film, he did not have time to include the footage in the documentary prior to its Sundance premiere.

"We had a locked print and trying to re-edit a film with a new interview in 10 days is kind of difficult," Morgen tells Billboard.  "This is the picture I wanted -- I didn't want there to be a lot of people in the film."

Morgen does say that he hopes to include the Grohl interview in another version of the film.  Perhaps we will see it when Montage of Heck airs on HBO later this year.

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck premiered at Sundance on Saturday, January 24.  At the opening, Cobain's daughter -- and the film's executive producer -- Frances Bean Cobain shared a hug with her mother, Courtney Love, marking the pair's first public appearance together in several years.
