KIDinaKORNER/InterscopeImagine Dragons released two new songs Friday, "Follow You" and "Cutthroat," which will appear on their upcoming studio album.
"Follow You," as frontman Dan Reynolds reveals on TikTok, is extremely personal as it tells the story of the text message that saved his marriage with wife Aja Volkman.
The "It's Time" singer admits that he and Volkman were close to signing divorce papers after not speaking for "7 months," when she sent him a message out of the blue that changed his life.
"She said she didn't need to own me to love me. She loved me without expectations," he revealed. "We ditched the lawyers and went to lunch."
He elaborated on Twitter that the text message also inspired them to "remarry and stay together. I proposed again and she said yes, again."
"I wrote 'Follow You' after we got back together. I wanted it to represent a love that is realistic. One where love isn't perfect but it endures," wrote the Grammy winner.
As for the other song, "Cutthroat," he reveals in the same Twitter chain, is "the opposite side of the record, both sonically and thematically. It's an exorcism of self pity. An examination of my life - finding that I am beyond blessed - and trying to rid myself of self doubt and loathing."
Continues Reynolds, the single celebrates "that at the end of the day only one Dan will prevail, and it's the one that loves myself."
The brash self-love anthem contains the screaming lyric, "Only one of us will make it out alive and it's not you."
Imagine Dragons' unnamed album is the follow-up to the one-two punch of 2017's Evolve and 2018's Origins. A release date has not been announced.
