Karen O Writes Theme Song for “Rise of the Tomb Raider” Video Game

ABC/Randy HolmesKaren O is entering the gaming world with "I Shall Rise," a new track from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman that'll serve as the theme song for the upcoming Rise of the Tomb Raider video game. The full song will be released Friday, but you can hear snippets of "I Shall Rise" in the official Rise of the Tomb Raider trailer, which is now streaming at RollingStone.com.

"It all sounded really tasty," O tells Rolling Stone of writing music for Rise of the Tomb Raider. "They wanted drama and high-stakes and melodrama. That was very appealing to me because I love making music connected to a storyline. It was all stuff I loved like having the theme song to [game protagonist Lara Croft] becoming an icon and the creation myth to the moment she becomes Lara."

"You know how Gloria Gaynor has her 'I Will Survive'? I always wanted to do my version of that and this was it," Karen adds.

As a new mom, O also related to the game's themes of "transformation and survival and realizing one's own destiny and pushing past one's own limits." "I've been going through my own transformation," she says of handling motherhood.

O released her debut solo album, Crush Songs, last year. Her last album with Yeah Yeah Yeahs was 2013's Mosquito.

"It's just waiting to see how everything works out with starting a family and seizing the moment when it strikes," O says when asked about the status of Yeah Yeah Yeahs. "I'm in the full-time job of [motherhood] at the moment."

Rise of the Tomb Raider will be released November 10.
