Wilco Releases New Album, “Star Wars,” for Free

Credit: Austin NelsonThere has been an awakening -- have you felt it? Yes, Wilco has awakened from their studio slumber to release Star Wars Thursday night, their first new album since 2011's The Whole Love. To add to the surprise, Star Wars is available as a free download from the band's website, WilcoWorld.net. The full album is also streaming now on YouTube.

Star Wars will also get a traditional physical release, which you will have to pay for. The album will be released on CD August 21 and on vinyl November 27. Star Wars will be available as a free digital download until August 13.

The album has very little to do with Star Wars, the movies, at least judging by the album's cover, which features a white Persian cat sitting on a black velvet cushion in front of a bud vase with three pale roses. The visual feel is sort of a throwback to the 1950s.

Wilco is currently on tourwith a series of headlining shows and festival dates, including this weekend's Pitchfork Music Festival. You can stream Wilco's Pitchfork set at Pitchfork.com starting tonight, July 17, at 8:30 p.m. CT.

Here is the track list for Star Wars:

"EKG"
"Random Name Generator"
"The Joke Explained"
"You Satellite"
"Taste the Ceiling"
"Pickled Ginger"
"Where Do I Begin"
"Cold Slope"
