As U2 gears up for the December 1 release of its latest studio album, Songs of Experience, the Irish rock legends will be presented with a prestigious honor this Sunday at the 2017 MTV European Music Awards -- the Global Icon award.
In celebration of the honor, the band will give a special performance in London's Trafalgar Square on Saturday as part of the "MTV Presents Trafalgar Square" event. A portion of U2's set will then be broadcast on the 2017 MTV EMAs ceremony, which takes place at London's SSE Arena, Wembley and airs in the U.S. on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
"U2's impact on music, pop culture and social issues around the world has been tremendous," says Viacom executive Bruce Gillmer. "For over four decades and counting, they've entertained, influenced, and inspired fans around the globe and we're thrilled and honored to announce that they are this year's Global Icon."
Previous Global Icon winners include Queen, Ozzy Osbourne, Duran Duran and Green Day.
U2 also will compete for the Best Live award at this year's MTV EMAs. Visit MTVEMA.com to find out more details about the ceremony and to vote for your favorite nominated artists.
